Gerald didnât say much as Grace drove him through the streets of her old district. It was so vastly different being a part of a detective unit rather than working patrol. She didnât have a district anymore; the city was her district. If she worked a department that had more cases, then they might split them up, but she didnât. Missing Persons wasnât as busy as gang violence or fraud or sex crimes.
Sighing, Grace turned the corner back to Geraldâs home. She knew where he lived as soon as he had given her the address. Sheâd gone to the house before. Grace remembered its peeling ugly green paint and the halfway-torn down white picket fence.
He broke her reverie. âYou donât remember, do you?â
âRemember what?â Grace asked, sparing Gerald a glance. âI have a lot of things I need to remember.â
âYou arrested me.â
âDid I?â Grace asked, her brow furrowing as she tried to recall the details. She remembered the house but not him being there. It had been a domestic violence call.
âYeah.â
Grace hummed and took the next turn. âWhat for?â she asked. She could easily look it up if she wanted to, but she didnât want to take the time. Gerald would tell her anyway; he didnât seem as though he was going to withhold the information.
âDrugs.â
Grace nodded, still not remembering him. Then again, drugs changed a person, usually more than they could ever realize without being sober and looking at their lives as a whole. She licked her lips and took the last turn to the run down green house Gerald lived in.
âI was high.â
âOh,â Grace said, still not sure if he was remembering correctly. There were plenty of other officers on the force. Not many women, not many blonde women, but still, it could have easily been someone else. âWhen was this?â
âLike ten years ago.â
Grace shook her head. âIâm not sure it was me. Iâd only just started working on the force ten years ago.â
âIt was you,â he said, grinning. âI remember.â
âGood for you,â Grace muttered, not sure if he was trying to be flirty or creepy. He had only achieved the latter, and she shivered at the thought. Him remembering her meant nothing. He had far less arrests under his belt than she did, and ten years was a long time.
âYou wanted me to go to rehab.â
âAnd did you?â
âNot then.â
Grace nodded again. She knew that would have happened. It usually did. Or if she did convince people to go to rehab for their drug problem, they didnât usually make it with only one chance. Peter was an enigma in that regard, but Grace was sure he had some other power on his side. Heâd call that the power of God; Grace, on the other hand, wasnât convinced there was a God.
âI did eventually, though. That one you recommended, too. I used your name.â
âOdd,â she said. Normally when people used her name at the facility, they would contact her to find out if sheâd really sent them or not. It didnât matter in the long run, but Grace thought it odd nonetheless.
